How to Acclimate Your Deck

Acclimation is a vital first step that many people neglect. Wood is a porous material that naturally adapts to the moisture content of the surrounding air. This process can take time, and will cause the wood to either shrink or expand. If you install your Brazilian decking without letting it acclimate, the deck boards will warp or crack.

The deck boards must be allowed to sit outside for several weeks. The exact time will depend on the weather and your local climate. The wood should be stored in conditions similar to the final install site. Do not cover the decking with a tarp. When you stack the deck boards, put spacers between each layer to allow plenty of air flow to each face of each board.
